.Dt INSTALLATION 7
.Os
.Sh NAME
.Nm installation
.Nd installing rawnix from the netinstall image
.Sh DESCRIPTION
The rawnix netinstall image boots to a root shell.
Nothing networked starts by itself: the network, and the clock, are
brought up by hand, so each step says what it is doing.
The packages are downloaded from rsync.rawnix.org during the install.
.Pp
An install has these steps, in this order.
Each has its own page:
.Bl -enum
.It
Bring up the network; see
.Xr network 7 .
.It
Partition the disk, make the file systems and mount them under
.Pa /mnt ;
see
.Xr partition 7 ,
or for an encrypted system
.Xr encryption 7 .
.It
Mount the EFI system partition at
.Pa /mnt/boot/efi .
.It
Create the file system skeleton:
.Dl # setup-filesystem /mnt
See
.Xr setup-filesystem 8 .
.It
Write the kernel command line:
.Dl # setup-boot /mnt
See
.Xr setup-boot 8 .
.It
Install the packages:
.Dl # install --target /mnt base
See
.Xr install 8
for the groups; on a virtual machine use
.Cm kernel-cloud
in place of
.Cm kernel .
.It
Write the file system table and enter the new system:
.Bd -literal -offset indent
# genfstab /mnt > /mnt/etc/fstab
# enter-chroot /mnt
.Ed
.Pp
See
.Xr genfstab 8
and
.Xr enter-chroot 8 .
.It
Inside the new system, set the essentials:
.Bd -literal -offset indent
# passwd root
# echo myhostname > /etc/hostname
# ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Region/City /etc/localtime
# ports -u
.Ed
.Pp
Run
.Ic ports -u
before any
.Xr pkg 8
command: pkg sets up its dependency database the first time it runs,
and needs the ports tree for that.
.It
Check the boot setup before rebooting; see
.Xr bootloader 7 .
On a machine with legacy BIOS rather than UEFI, its section
.Sx Legacy BIOS
lists the steps that remain, and the partition the disk needs.
.El
.Pp
The order matters in two places.
.Ic setup-boot
must run before the kernel is installed, and the EFI system partition
must be mounted by then: installing the kernel runs
.Ic limine-sync ,
which writes the boot menu from what
.Ic setup-boot
wrote.
.Pp
.Ic setup-help
prints a one-screen summary of the same steps.
.Pp
The image itself boots on both: UEFI firmware starts the kernel
directly, and a legacy BIOS starts it through Limine.
Nothing needs choosing when the image is written to a disk.
.Pp
.Xr rawnix 7
describes the system being installed, and
.Xr post-install 7
what to do once it boots.
.Sh EXAMPLES
A whole unencrypted install on
.Pa /dev/sda ,
wired network:
.Bd -literal -offset indent
# dhcpcd eth0
# fdisk /dev/sda
# mkfs.fat -F32 /dev/sda1
# mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda2
# mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
# mkdir -p /mnt/boot/efi && mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi
# setup-filesystem /mnt
# setup-boot /mnt
# install --target /mnt base
# genfstab /mnt > /mnt/etc/fstab
# enter-chroot /mnt
